Nine Tennessee Counties Receive Clean Audit Reports by the Comptroller’s Office

Nine Tennessee counties audited by the Tennessee Comptroller of the Treasury have all received a clean audit report for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2022, the comptroller’s office announced.

County audits are completed annually and are conducted by the Comptroller’s Division of Local Government Audit. Findings in each audit report are used to report on “weaknesses, deficiencies, or areas of noncompliance within government operations,” according to the comptroller’s office.

The nine counties in which audits came back clean for fiscal year 2022 are Blount, Cannon, Campbell, Cumberland, Giles, Hamblen, Roane, Sevier, and Unicoi.

The counties were recognized last week at the Tennessee County Services Association Legislative Conference in Gatlinburg for their clean audit reports. Representatives from each county were awarded with framed certificates for what the comptroller’s office calls a “significant accomplishment.”

“These nine counties should be proud,” Tennessee Comptroller of the Treasury Jason Mumpower said in a statement. “I commend all of the elected officials, leaders, and county staff who have committed to a well-run government that serves its citizens well.”

Blount, Cumberland, Giles, Roane, and Hamblen counties have all received clean audits for two years in a row.

Blount County has also received a clean audit in seven of the last eight fiscal years.

In fiscal year 2022, the 91 Tennessee counties audited revealed a total of 308 findings, representing an average of 3.38 findings per county – slightly more than the average 3.05 findings in fiscal year 2021’s annual audit reports.

Through the Department of Audit, the comptroller’s office is responsible for “ensuring financial integrity in regard to a governmental entity’s financial position and results of operations, compliance with applicable statutes, grant agreements, rules and regulations, and/or its record of efficiency and effectiveness.”

The Department of Audit comprises three divisions: State Audit, Local Government Audit, and Investigations.
